The First Fast Food Chains

A&W( Allen and Wright)

In June of 1919, Roy W. Allen opened up his first root beer stand in Lodi, California. The drink became so popular that Allen franchised the root beer in 1921. In the next year, Allen partnered with another root beer business partner: Frank Wright. Their partnership turned into A&W root beer (Allen and Wright). That same year, they built the first A&W drive-in restaurant. This restaurant was the first franchised restaurant, and A&W eventually expanded all over the U.S.. This was the first chain restaurant in the U.S.. However, it was not until 1963 that A&W began to sell their famous burgers. The first burger chain came from elsewhere.

White Castle

In the year of 1921, Billy Ingram opened the first White Castle in Wichita, Kansas with a mere $700. White Castle was the first chain restaurant that sold modern fast food. Ingram sold burger patties for five cents each. At that time, five cents was still an affordable price for a burger patty, a fact that White Castle was famous for. By 1941, White Castle had sold over 50 million burgers. It took another nine years before the burger prices would go over ten cents. White Castle is not popular outside of the U.S., but it is still considered the first burger chain.

Kentucky Fried Chicken

The most famous fried chicken chain started in the year of 1930. Colonel Harland Sanders built his first fried chicken location in front of a gas station in Corbin, Kentucky. The business was very popular, with people describing it as "Finger Lickin' Good". Eventually, there were so many people to accommodate that Sanders decided to use a pressure cooker as opposed to the traditional method of skillet frying. KFC expanded all over the U.S. to become the most popular fried chicken chain restaurant. Today, KFC's are located in Canada, China, and almost everywhere else in the world.
