The Newer Fast Food Chains

McDonald's

McDonald's is the largest fast food chain in the world. There are over 33,000 McDonald's locations all over the world. How did McDonald's begin? McDonald's was first opened in 1940 in San Bernadino, California by Dick and Mac McDonald. The original McDonald's featured a drive-in restaurant with a variety of barbecue choices. However, after some time the barbecue was replaced with a standard nine-item menu with all the favourite McDonald's selections that we love today. At that time, Speedee was the iconic McDonald's mascot that represented the speed of its service. That mascot was eventually replaced by Ronald McDonald. (I personally find Ronald very creepy especially as a children's mascot).

Burger King

Burger King was opened in 1954 under the name of Insta-Burger King. Located in Jacksonville, Florida, Burger King featured quality burger ingredients: Flame-broiled beef, Crispy lettuce, Tomatoes, Onions, Ketchup, Pickles, and Cheese. The unique feature that Burger King had was an instant-broiler. This broiler proved very efficient in terms of making burgers, and BK eventually had all their franchises cook their burgers with this method.

Subway

Subway was first opened as Pete's Super Submarines on September 28, 1965. The first location was in Bridgeport, Connecticut. This business was named after Pete Buck. Pete Buck lent $1000 to a seventeen year old Fred De Luca to start a sandwich restaurant. The idea was to allow the customers to select from eleven ingredients in order to make their personal submarine sandwiches. After one year, the business had exploded spectacularly, and the two partners decided to expand. Why did they change their name? Try saying Pete's Submarines quickly and see what it sounds like: Pizza Marines. People would often wander into the restaurant (Obviously not looking at the name on the front) asking for pizza.
